The World Health Report published in 1981 estimated that there were 19.34
a million people who are bilaterally blind (less than 3/60 in the better eye) from age-related cataract. This represented 43% of all blindness. The result of these two factors means that the population aged over 60 years will double during the next 20 years. This increase in the elderly population will result in a greater number of people with visual loss and blindness from cataract who will need eye services.
